Most ten year olds are more concerned with avoiding the tiny ammonium of homework they are assigned (author speaking from personal experience) than the well being of those around them. But Columbia, SC ten-year-old punched well above his very small weight when he rescued a local women who had fallen in her yard.
Charles was riding his bike when he saw 85-year-old Italean Hudson lying face down in her yard. He stopped to make sure she was okay, and Italean told the boy she had been unable to get up for an hour.
But, he did exactly what he was supposed to do. He immediately found someone to call 911 and stayed with her until help arrived.
Family members don’t know what could have happened if Charles had not stopped. Charles said he was just doing what was right, and he hopes it inspires his classmates to do good deeds.
“First I thought, ‘stranger,’ then I thought ‘she really looks like she needs help,” Charles said. “I saw her on the ground and I’m a very helpful person. If I see anything like that, I’m going to help. It was really scary for me because I’m only ten, I didn’t know what to do,” said an extremely self-aware Charles, clearly outlining his thought process.
Hudson’s daughter said her mom is out of the hospital and recovering. Charles even paid them a visit after school on Thursday once Italean was released from the hospital. She said Charles is a special angel in their lives.
